School Site Grants for 2007/2008 Announced

Approximately $15,000 is being distributed to seven Putnam City schools to increase student achievement and enhance educational offerings, thanks to grants awarded by the Putnam City Public Schools Foundation.  Each year, the Foundation awards grants to help schools meet goals in the district's comprehensive local education plan and the No Child Left Behind Act.  Schools receiving Foundation grants are Central Intermediate, Putnam City Academy, Western Oaks Elementary, Wiley Post Elementary, Ralph Downs Elementary, James L. Dennis Elementary, and Lake Park Elementary.

Central Intermediate School

 Amped for Learning
$3,100

Boys to Men and Women to Be
$3,000

The grant, “Boys to Men and Women to Be” will turn negative todays into positive tomorrows for the students at Putnam City Academy.  It will provide mentors, job-skill training, health and hygiene training, personal and business etiquette and life-skill development through education and training.

Western Oaks Elementary

Cool Clickers for Captivating Kids’ Comprehension in the Classroom
$2,500

In the 3rd-5th grade classrooms at Western Oaks Elementary, “cool clickers”, a remote control response system used by the students, will spur interest and increase attention while teaching them reading and math.  The clickers will be used to assess individual student progress and help teachers know exactly what needs to be taught.

Wiley Post Elementary
Grant Writer:  Karie Carpenter

 eDUCATION with eBOOKS and Playaways
$1,500

For grades PreK-5th at Wiley Post Elementary, library books will be transformed into electronic books (eBOOKS) downloaded onto a computer and projected onto a screen in the classroom.  It is this type of technology that will engage our next generation of learners.  The grant will also provide for “Playaways”, which are a combination of ipods/books on tape.  The students just grab the playaway unit, plug in the earphones and press play.

Ralph Downs Elementary School
Grant Writers:  Laura Falling and Angela Kwok

Hearing Each Lesson:  All Ears Aboard
$1,500

4th grade teachers at Ralph Downs Elementary will use a wireless microphone to deliver instruction which will be amplified through speakers located around the classroom.  Students will hear each aspect of the lesson so they can listen without interruption and will be able to follow through with directions for the assignment.

James L. Dennis Elementary School
Grant Writer:  Rachel McDaniel

 Walk the Talk
$1,000

What do listening and walking have in common?  They are both forms of exercise.  Combining the two will give 1st through 5th graders at Dennis Elementary a healthy body and mind.  With the playaway digital audio books, the students will not only exercise their body at recess, they will improve fluency comprehension and vocabulary skills as they listen to self-playing audio books while walking their *Mile Club laps.

Lake Park Elementary School
Grant Writers:  Katherine Bishop, Kelli Chastain, and Donna McMullen

We’re In It To Win It from Start-to-Finish
$2,758

This grant for PreK-5th grade teachers at Lake Park Elementary will allow them to purchase paperback, audio and computerized books.  It will enable students to work independently and at their own pace while allowing teachers to collect computerized data and mentor student progress.  It will empower teachers with quality literacy interventions to help all students access knowledge, which equals success!
