Approximately $15,000 is being distributed to seven Putnam City schools to increase student achievement and enhance educational offerings, thanks to grants awarded by the Putnam City Public Schools Foundation. Each year, the Foundation awards grants to help schools meet goals in the district's comprehensive local education plan and the No Child Left Behind Act. Schools receiving Foundation grants are Central Intermediate, Putnam City Academy, Western Oaks Elementary, Wiley Post Elementary, Ralph Downs Elementary, James L. Dennis Elementary, and Lake Park Elementary.

Amped for Learning

Students retain what they can read, write and hear.
The “Amped for Learning” grant at Central Intermediate will provide
amplifiers to the teachers to boost their speech volume, thereby providing the
learning concepts in a friendly voice to be heard throughout the classroom.
Putnam City
Academy

Boys to Men and Women to Be
$3,000
The grant, “Boys to Men and Women to Be” will turn negative
todays into positive tomorrows for the students at Putnam
City Academy. It will provide mentors, job-skill training,
health and hygiene training, personal and business etiquette and life-skill
development through education and training.
Western Oaks Elementary

Cool Clickers for Captivating Kids’ Comprehension in the
Classroom

In the 3rd-5th grade classrooms at
Western Oaks Elementary, “cool clickers”, a remote control response system used
by the students, will spur interest and increase attention while teaching them
reading and math. The clickers will be
used to assess individual student progress and help teachers know exactly what
needs to be taught.
Wiley Post Elementary

eDUCATION with eBOOKS and Playaways
$1,500
For grades PreK-5th at Wiley Post Elementary,
library books will be transformed into electronic books (eBOOKS) downloaded
onto a computer and projected onto a screen in the classroom. It is this type of technology that will
engage our next generation of learners.
The grant will also provide for “Playaways”, which are a combination of
ipods/books on tape. The students just
grab the playaway unit, plug in the earphones and press play.

Elementary School

Hearing Each Lesson:
All Ears Aboard
$1,500
4th grade teachers at Ralph Downs Elementary will
use a wireless microphone to deliver instruction which will be amplified
through speakers located around the classroom.
Students will hear each aspect of the lesson so they can listen without
interruption and will be able to follow through with directions for the
assignment.

Walk the Talk

What do listening and walking have in common? They are both forms of exercise. Combining the two will give 1st through
5th graders at Dennis Elementary a healthy body and mind. With the playaway digital audio books, the
students will not only exercise their body at recess, they will improve fluency
comprehension and vocabulary skills as they listen to self-playing audio books
while walking their *Mile Club laps.

We’re In It To Win It from Start-to-Finish

This grant for PreK-5th grade teachers at Lake
Park Elementary will allow them to purchase paperback, audio and computerized
books. It will enable students to work
independently and at their own pace while allowing teachers to collect
computerized data and mentor student progress.
It will empower teachers with quality literacy interventions to help all
students access knowledge, which equals success!
