Foundation Awards $25,000 in School Site Grants

The Putnam City Foundation awarded $25,000 School Site Grants in 2005.
"CSI (Communicating Scientific Inquiries)" - Kenneth Cooper Middle School
Working
through a multifaceted interactive program obtained through this grant,
students become crime scene investigators when they embark on a
weeklong project requiring the use of science lab skills to solve a
mystery.
"Destination Math" - Coronado Heights Elementary School
This
full year computer-assisted program brings math understanding to
students by helping them master skills as they solve meaningful
problems.
"A Revolutionary Idea" - Social Studies Curriculum Department
This
project puts high-interest leveled, non-fiction books about the
Revolutionary War and the birth of the United States into the hands of
reluctant readers to inspire them to read, learn, and study both
independently and cooperatively.
"Nuts About Nonfiction" - James L. Dennis Elementary School
Sets
of attractive non-fiction books published by National Geographic are
provided by this grant to students at their individual reading levels
to help them improve their reading skills as they learn about history,
science, math, and the world in which they live,
"Parent Education Center" - Apollo Elementary School
Funds
from this grant will be used to establish a resource room containing
materials to be used by parents to increase their skills in multiple
areas which will assist them in providing support for their children?s
healthy development.
"Summer School Community Scholarship" - Putnam City Summer School
This
program will provide much needed summer tutoring to selected at-risk
students who will, in return, give eighteen hours of community service
at their home school during the semester following summer school.
"Teaching to the MAX" - Putnam City High School
This
grant provides funds to bring Dr. Mark Forget to instruct faculty in
the proper implementation of his highly successful program of reading
comprehension strategies that is often referred to by the acronym ?MAX?
(Motivation, Acquisition, eXtension).
"The World at Our Fingertips: Interactive Smart Board" - Overholser Elementary School
The
purchase of a SmartBoard will allow students and teachers to
incorporate technology into the classroom that allows hands-on
manipulation of projected computer images-Overholser Elementary School.
"WOW, Wildcats? Opportunity to Work" - Central Middle School
Providing
transportation home for students who stay after school for additional
help or to complete their make-up work on three designated days each
week will decrease the number of failing grades as it promotes
increased achievement.
The Putnam City Public Schools Foundation
aids Putnam City Schools in enhancing and enriching education of
district students. Foundation funds support revitalization of
neighborhoods surrounding schools, grants for literacy and mathematics
programs, recognition of excellence in staff, students and volunteers,
and many other programs.
